How do group swim lessons work?

Group swim lessons are a cost-effective and fun way to learn how to swim with a group of peers. Typically you will attend a group swim class once a week, although we recommend coming more often if you are looking to progress at a faster rate or if you simply enjoy the class.

All group classes are organized into swim levels. A person's swim level is determined by age as well as ability. The swim level sheet will help you choose the swim level that is right for you. All skills listed under a particular swim level are the skills that are learned in that level.

Once you choose the appropriate swim level you will need to consult our swim schedule to view all the days and times a class for that level is offered. Be sure to choose a day and time you know will work with your schedule for the duration of the semester. Semesters tend to run anywhere between 5 and 12 weeks depending on the season. When you register for a group class you are obligated to come in every week on the day and time you select until the end of the semester.

How do I enroll in a group swim class?

  1. Determine which swim level you should be in by consulting the swim level sheet
  2. Decide which semester you would like to attend. The schedule you are viewing applies to both the first and second semesters of that season. You have the option of attending one or both semesters of the season, or you can choose to enroll in a class on our school year schedule. The Year-Round schedule is similar to the seasonal schedule except you register for the entire school year (August - May)
  3. Choose a day and time to come in based on the available group classes being offered for your level
  4. Fill out a registration form online or in person

Please note that you are more than welcome to choose more than one class day and time but by doing so you still must commit to attending whichever classes you choose for the duration of the semester you select.

What is a semester and how long does it last?

Only seasonal schedules are divided into semesters. The school year schedule requires that you register for the entire school year (August-May) (3 payment plan available).

Each of the three swim seasons (winter/spring, summer, and fall/winter) are divided into 2 more-or-less equal halves, or semesters.

The winter/spring season starts at the beginning of January and ends mid-May.

The summer season is the shortest season of the three. It begins at the end of May and finishes at the beginning of August.

The fall/winter season actually begins at the start of the school year and ends just before the winter holiday.

The duration of a semester varies depending on the season. The specific dates for each semester are listed on the top, left-hand portion of the seasonal swim schedule.

What if I choose the wrong swim level?

No worries! We can always move you into a class at a different level as long as the class you are looking to move into is available.

How many times per week do I come in for a group swim class?

It's up to you how often you would like to attend swim lessons. You select which days and times you would like to come in based on the schedule of classes offered for your level. Keep in mind that when you enroll in multiple classes you are committed to attending those classes every week on the day and time you select for the duration of the semester.

What if I want to come more than once per week?

If you would like to attend more than one group class per week, simply indicate which classes you are interested in enrolling in on the registration form. If you are enrolling for a class on the seasonal schedule be sure to select the correct semester. Keep in mind that you can enroll in another group class at any time so long as the class is not full; once you have been enrolled in a class for that semester you can call us at any time and we can enroll you in another class over the phone. If you are joining a class after the semester has begun we will prorate the cost of missed classes back to you.

What happens if we need to skip a group class?

A make-up class will be offered with a doctor's note only. Make-ups must be scheduled within 7 days of the missed class. There are NO refunds or credits given for ANY reason. Please see us at the swim counter if you are eligible and would like to schedule a make-up lesson.

How much do group swim lessons cost?

The cost of the lessons depends on the swim level which in turn determines the duration of the class.

Most group classes offered are 30 minutes long and cost $14/class; these swim levels include Shrimps, Guppies, Barnacles, Seahorses, Angelfish, Otters, Flounders, Triggerfish, and Sea Lions.

More advanced levels in the 6 and older age group are 45 minutes long and cost $20/class; these swim levels include Manta Rays, Dolphins, and Reef Sharks, as well as the Adult beginner and Adult intermediate classes.

Only the endurance classes are 1 hour long and cost $26/class; this includes the Endurance class for kids as well as for adults.

You must pay in full for all group lessons in a semester when registering. For example, if you have decided to enroll in a 30-minute group class and there are 9 weeks in the semester your total for group lessons would be $126 ($14/class x 9 classes).

How do I know which swim level I should be in?

If you are considering enrolling in group classes, determine which level you would be in by consulting the swim level sheet on our website. The swim level sheet will list the skills learned in each level; therefore, if you can do all the skills in one level but cannot do all the skills in the proceeding level, you would want to choose the latter of the two levels.

What if I decide I need to switch to a different group class?

You are more than welcome to move to another class of either the same level or even a different level as long as there is availability in the class you want to switch to.

My instructor told me that I'm ready to move up to the next level? Can I move right away?

Of course! As long as class availability permits you may move to a different class at a different level at any time. Please call or visit the swim counter to switch classes.

What if I don't like the instructor?

If you are dissatisfied with your instructor we ask that you please visit the swim counter and discuss the matter with us. We try to ensure that every person who attends classes here learns how to swim; we understand that personality differences between instructors and students can sometimes impede progress. If this is the case we would be happy to work with you to ensure you receive the quality of service you expect. In most cases we can simply move you into a class with a different instructor. If you are still dissatisfied after switching instructors we are willing to work with you in any way we can.

How soon will I learn to swim in group lessons?

How quickly you are able to learn is dependant on many factors, such as how often you are able to practice the skills you learn outside of class; how often you attend class; how well you are able to work with the peers in your class; whether you have any pre-existing stigmas or phobias associated with the water; and how willing you are to learn. While we cannot guarantee that you will learn to swim in one semester, you should see improvement within that time period.

What do I do if I feel I am not progressing fast enough?

If you feel you are not progressing we can try a variety of things to help you improve at a faster rate. Your options include, but are not limited to:

We are very flexible and if you are not satisfied we will be happy to work with you to help you achieve your goals!

How will I know when I am able to move up to the next swim level?

At the end of every semester our instructors will evaluate you and assess which level you should be in based on the progress you have made. Your progress report will list the goals of the class and your instructor will mark whether you've passed or need improvement next to each of the goals listed. If your instructor feels that you are ready to advance to the next level they will check off a box at the bottom of the progress report labeled "Move up" and they will fill in the appropriate level for you.

If you are ever unsure about whether you have chosen the correct level you may ask the instructor for their opinion before or after your lesson. If you require more detailed feedback from your instructor you may email them, or you may leave your contact information with an administrator at the swim counter and we will be happy to relay your message to your instructor.

Can I enroll in both group and private lessons?
